SUNSHINE.
If you ever eat at my house, a conversation to most likely come up is where my dishes come from and then I get the chance to profess my love to two ceramic artists I got the opportunity to go to school with while they were working on their Master’s. Their names are Sunshine Cobb and Ernie Gentry, if you haven’t been to my place yet. I have collected and love so many of their pieces that when the guy and I were first dating, he stayed at my place while I was at work to surprisingly, but necessarily, do my dishes. He called and the first thing he said was, “So sorry, but a cup broke.” I told him as long as it wasn’t Sunshine or Ernie’s, we’d be OK. He had no idea how to tell them apart and I later diagnosed a Sunshine cup as non-functional. It was one of many obstacles that we worked through.
Sunshine is now a working artist in California and recently came to Utah for a weekend and spent one night with me as we caught up on life after graduation. She is continuing to make (and teach) hand made functional objects that can be used everyday to richen your eating experience or the landscape of your home. The warm colors mixed with splashes of vibrant texture is what keeps drawing my eye to wanting more of her work. Especially her cake stands and pots.
